Manchester City has signed Argentina international goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille on a two-year deal, both clubs announced on Wednesday.
The 34-year-old will serve as City’s second-choice goalkeeper behind Italian international Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The move marks Rulli’s return to City, having spent the 2016/17 season at the Etihad Stadium without making a first-team appearance.
“This is an amazing opportunity for me and one I had to grasp. When the chance to join Manchester City comes along you have to go for it,” Rulli said.
Rulli said he was impressed by City’s success and high standards and promised to work hard to settle into the team.
The goalkeeper has won eight caps for Argentina and was part of the squad that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2024 Copa America.
He was also in the Argentina squad that reached last month’s World Cup final, where they lost to Spain.
Rulli has previously played for Real Sociedad, Villarreal, Montpellier and Ajax.
He became a memorable figure in the 2021 Europa League final, scoring a penalty for Villarreal against Manchester United before saving David de Gea’s spot-kick as Villarreal won the shootout 11-10.
Rulli’s departure comes as Marseille look to raise funds after being fined €10 million for failing to meet UEFA’s financial break-even targets.
The French club also missed out on Champions League football after finishing fifth in Ligue 1 during the 2025/26 season.
Marseille have already parted ways with several players, including Argentine defender Facundo Medina, who joined Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday.
Some of its highest earners, like English forward Mason Greenwood, have also left for Fenerbahce, while Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has moved to Spanish side Deportivo La Coruña.
