The Edo State House of Assembly has a new Speaker following the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku, who stepped down on Monday as lawmakers prepared to remove him from office.

Yekini Idiaye, a third-term legislator representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, was chosen to fill the position under a zoning arrangement that reserves the speakership for the Edo North Senatorial District when the governor comes from Edo Central.

Lawmakers said Idiaye, the most senior member from Edo North, was selected in line with the assembly’s internal zoning formula.

His emergence followed Agbebaku’s resignation, which came after 17 of the 24 assembly members signed an impeachment notice on Sunday night, sources told PUNCH Online.

Agbebaku’s media aide, Ivy Ebojele, confirmed his resignation but declined to provide further details.

“I can confirm the Speaker’s resignation but details will be made public later,” she said.
