The head of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned that the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is spreading faster than any previous epidemic.

WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus stated during an emergency meeting that health officials are struggling to contain the virus as it risks spreading to neighbouring countries.

The announcement follows official DR Congo reports confirming more than 2,300 deaths out of nearly 5,000 cases, making this 17th outbreak the deadliest in the nation’s history.

Health officials face severe challenges in eastern and northern provinces, where armed conflict, weak government presence, inadequate health infrastructure, and frequent population movement along river and mining routes accelerate transmission.

The WHO currently evaluates the public health risk as very high inside the DR Congo and high in neighbouring countries such as Uganda.

Response teams are decentralising operations, keeping an eye on high-risk transportation routes like motorcycle taxis, and trying to track down undetected gearbox chains where victims pass away outside of medical facilities because there is currently no approved vaccine for the particular Bundibugyo strain causing this surge.
