US President Donald Trump paused the planned rollout of 50-per cent duties on select Canadian goods late Tuesday, granting a three-day reprieve mere hours before a midnight deadline.

Trump announced on Truth Social that Washington and Ottawa reached a preliminary deal subject to final documentation, hinting that the agreement could also revive the Keystone XL pipeline project.

While Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney noted that significant work remains, the US Trade Representative’s office confirmed that the prospective pact covers market access, economic security, and digital trade alignment.

In response, Canadian negotiators offered targeted concessions—such as restocking provincial shelves with American spirits—while seeking broader relief from US duties hitting Canada’s auto, steel, lumber, and aluminium sectors.
