The Edo State House of Assembly formally impeached the suspended Speaker Blessing Agbebaku on Monday, overriding his prior resignation.

Lawmakers elected Yekini Idaiye to replace Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency 1, after 17 members signed the impeachment notice.

Majority Leader Sunny Ojiezele moved the motion for formal impeachment, which Etsako Central representative Ahmed Waziri seconded.

The House converted Agbebaku’s indefinite suspension to a full impeachment because he failed to officially present and document his resignation notice following his initial suspension.

Speaker Idaiye instructed Agbebaku to surrender all government property immediately and warned that law enforcement would intervene if he failed to comply.

“This is to let the public know that the Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached the suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku,” Idaiye declared during plenary.

“And the impeached Speaker is to return all government property in his possession, and security agencies would be engaged if the former Speaker fails to comply with the directive of the House.”
