Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and other global stars have mourned country music legend Dolly Parton, who has died at 80.
Beyoncé, who collaborated with Parton on her Grammy-winning album Cowboy Carter, issued a statement on Tuesday to mourn Parton’s death.
She also described the late singer as “the North Star” and praised her talent and strength.
“You were the barometer. The North Star. Bold and brilliant. Talented and tenacious,” Beyoncé wrote on her website Tuesday.
Swift also paid tribute to Parton, saying, “A world without Dolly doesn’t feel possible, real, or right.”
She said Parton’s generosity and influence had changed countless lives and ensured that her legacy would last.
Tributes have also come from country stars like Reba McEntire, Kacey Musgraves, Linda Ronstadt and Jack White, as well as actors Julia Roberts, Jane Fonda and Jamie Lee Curtis.
McEntire praised Parton’s love, music and generosity, saying, “There will never ever be another you.”
Roberts described Parton as “a magical and joyous human”, while Fonda said the singer would remain “woven into all our lives and hearts forever.”
US President Donald Trump has ordered American flags to be lowered across the country for one week in honour of Parton.
Trump called her death a “true loss for millions of people” and said, “There has never been anyone like her, and never will.”
Former President Joe Biden described Parton as “an American original” who treated people with kindness and respect.
Former President George W. Bush praised her work in literacy, health and community development, while former President Bill Clinton called her “one of a kind.”
Parton’s influence has also drawn tributes from Paul McCartney, Eminem, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Apple CEO Tim Cook.
McCartney recalled meeting her early in her career, while Eminem praised her after sharing a letter she had written to him.
Bezos said Parton lifted people through “her music, her generosity, and her joy”, while Cook described her as a “brilliant songwriter, cultural icon and dedicated philanthropist.”
According to Parton’s family, she died peacefully in Nashville on Tuesday after a brief battle with cancer.
The singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist built a career spanning more than six decades, becoming one of the world’s most beloved entertainers.
Her legacy includes global hits such as Jolene, 9 to 5, and I Will Always Love You, along with extensive charitable work, including her Imagination Library literacy programme.
