Manchester City striker Erling Haaland struck twice in the second half to lead the club to a 2-0 victory against Porto in their Champions League opener.
Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa produced a series of spectacular first-half saves to deny Haaland, but the Norwegian forward broke through two minutes after the restart by heading home Enzo Fernandez’s precise cross.
The double brought Haaland to 167 career goals for City, making him the third-highest goalscorer in the club’s history.
City manager Enzo Maresca fielded summer signing Ayyoub Bouaddi alongside Fernandez and Elliott Anderson, showcasing a revamped midfield following the club’s record offseason transfer spending.
While Bouaddi and Fernandez controlled the tempo early on, Porto mounted intense pressure in the second half, taking advantage of several sloppy defensive passes and a near-disastrous collision between City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Pepe.
Despite Porto’s late push, City’s defence held firm until Haaland extinguished any hopes of a home comeback in stoppage time.
The Norwegian striker clinically finished a cross from Rayan Ait-Nouri to secure all three points, taking his record to an astounding 59 goals in 59 career Champions League appearances.
The victory gives City a flying start to their European campaign under Maresca as they prepare for their upcoming group stage fixtures.
