The Nigerian government is set to deepen the digital integration of education records with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to eradicate certificate racketeering, streamline qualification verification, and protect genuine graduates.
Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa announced the initiative on Tuesday in Abuja during a meeting with NYSC Director-General Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu.
Alausa emphasised that digital reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s agenda aim to secure academic records, stating, “The digital transformation of Nigeria’s education system under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is strengthening the integrity of academic qualifications, tackling certificate racketeering and ensuring that genuine students and graduates are not disadvantaged.”
The Education Ministry is deploying the Nigerian Education Repository Data Bank and the Nigerian Education Data Infrastructure to track students throughout their academic journeys, authenticate university certificates, and assist tertiary institutions.
Authorities are currently developing an application programming interface to connect the ministry’s database directly with the NYSC.
Alausa noted that “discussions were ongoing with the NYSC on an application programming interface that would facilitate faster verification and seamless exchange of relevant data between both institutions,” resolving name discrepancies and administrative hurdles that previously delayed qualified graduates from entering the labour market or completing national service.
To permanently fix identity mismatches, the Nigerian government plans to launch a national Learner Identification Number alongside standardised naming protocols across all education and identity databases.
This digital crackdown follows high-profile fraud investigations, including a panel finding that former Minister Uche Nnaji forged his university degree certificate and JAMB detecting 15,000 forged admission letters.
NYSC Director-General Nafiu fully endorsed the ministry’s digital expansion, confirming that the corps already complies with cabinet directives to integrate with the national education repository and noting that NYSC’s adoption of QR codes has “virtually eliminated document cloning.”
