Five people were killed after a coach carrying Dutch tourists crashed in eastern Switzerland, police said on Friday. The accident occurred on Thursday afternoon in the eastern canton of Graubünden.

A local police spokesman said the coach struck a safety barrier before overturning and plunging down an embankment.

The Dutch Federation of Travel Agencies (ANVR) told AFP the vehicle belonged to tour company Oad and carried 48 passengers, all from the Netherlands.

The federation said the coach had departed the Netherlands on Monday and was on a day trip to Switzerland from Austria when the crash occurred.

The accident happened in the Zernez area, an entry point for visitors to the Swiss National Park.The park is a vast Alpine reserve covering more than 100 square kilometres (40 square miles) across the mountainous Engadine valley.
