Nashville officials have backed plans to rename the city’s international airport in honour of late country music legend Dolly Parton.

The proposal followed Parton’s death on August 25 at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer.

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) is expected to consider the proposed name change, which would honour Parton’s contribution to Tennessee’s music and cultural identity.

The Nashville Metro Council has already unanimously supported a resolution urging the airport authority to rename Nashville International Airport as Dolly Parton International Airport.

However, the airport authority still has the final decision.

The MNAA said it was working with the relevant parties to determine how Parton’s name and legacy would be incorporated into the airport’s identity.

The proposed renaming comes as Tennessee officials seek to honour Parton, one of the state’s most celebrated cultural figures.

Governor Bill Lee earlier announced his support for naming the airport after Parton, calling it a fitting tribute to her legacy.

“Dolly Parton’s extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state,” Lee said.

The proposal also follows a public petition calling for the airport to be named after the singer, which has attracted more than 175,000 signatures.

Parton was born in Tennessee, became one of the most influential figures in country music and was known globally for her music, philanthropy, and support for literacy.
