Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged United States (US) President Donald Trump to impose new sanctions on Russia over deadly strikes. Zelensky made the call on Friday while speaking at the Yalta European Strategy forum.
“Sanctions need to be imposed now,” he said, adding that he sometimes did not understand why decisions could not be made quickly.
His comments came after he announced plans to meet Trump in late September as Washington pushes for an end to the four-and-a-half-year war.
Zelensky also called for a truce covering Russian and Ukrainian strikes on energy infrastructure ahead of winter. He warned that Ukraine would retaliate if Russia attacked its energy grid.
“Russia knows that if they strike… they will receive the same in return,” Zelensky said.
Moscow and Kyiv have intensified long-range attacks in recent months, while US-led negotiations to end the conflict remain deadlocked.
An early morning Russian drone strike on a petrol station in Kyiv killed two people and left four others hospitalised, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Zelensky’s call comes as pressure grows for Washington to take stronger action against Moscow and push both sides towards a ceasefire.
