The United States government is moving forward with a $2.8 billion arms package for Israel, including one of the largest transfers of heavy munitions approved in recent years, according to reports by US media.
The proposed deal includes 40,000 one-ton bombs, with The Washington Post reporting that the package contains some of the most destructive weapons in Western arsenals. The shipment reportedly includes 20,000 MK-84 bombs, 20,000 BLU-117 bombs and 20,000 I-2000 Penetrator warheads.
The New York Times reported that the administration of US President Donald Trump had approved the sale, citing a US official familiar with the matter.
A senior US administration official told AFP that “all foreign arms sales are moving through the appropriate process,” but declined to provide details about transactions that have not been formally announced.
A State Department spokesperson also told AFP that “as a matter of policy, the Department does not confirm or comment on proposed arms sales until they have been formally notified to Congress.”
The reported agreement comes as the US military faces pressure over its own munitions stockpiles. Reports indicate that American weapons supplies have been affected by recent military operations, including the conflict with Iran, while the United States spent about $22.3 billion on munitions between February 28 and June 30.
The latest package follows a previous approval by the Trump administration in February 2025 for more than $7.4 billion worth of bombs, missiles and related military equipment for Israel, including MK-84 munitions.
The transfer of large-scale bombs has previously drawn international attention due to concerns over civilian casualties in Gaza.
During former President Joe Biden’s administration, a shipment of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel was delayed over concerns linked to their potential use in densely populated areas. The Trump administration later approved the delivery after taking office in early 2025.
The reported arms package will still go through the formal US arms sales process, which includes congressional notification before completion.
