Cristiano Ronaldo has been named in Portugal’s squad for the start of their 2026-27 UEFA Nations League campaign, marking Jorge Jesus’ first selection since taking charge of the national team.
The 41-year-old forward is expected to continue leading Portugal’s attack as he enters what could be the final season of a historic career. Ronaldo said last month that this campaign would “probably” be his last in professional football, ending a journey that has seen him score more than 950 goals for club and country.
New Portugal coach Jorge Jesus already has a close working relationship with Ronaldo, having managed the five-time Ballon d’Or winner at Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. Jesus left Al-Nassr in May after guiding the side to the Saudi Pro League title, then replaced Roberto Martinez after Portugal’s last-16 World Cup elimination.
Ronaldo remains the highest-scoring player in men’s international football history, with 146 goals in 233 appearances for Portugal. He also became the first player to score at six different World Cups during last summer’s tournament, although his performances attracted criticism, while Martinez faced questions over his continued support for the veteran captain.
Jesus has also recalled Borussia Dortmund forward Fabio Silva to the national team setup. Silva earns his first call-up since making his only senior appearance for Portugal in November 2024. Benfica midfielder Joao Palhinha has also returned to the squad after nearly a year away from international duty.
Portugal enter the Nations League campaign as two-time champions and defending title holders after defeating Spain on penalties in the 2025 final.
Their campaign begins at home against Wales in Lisbon on September 24, followed by an away match against Norway three days later. Portugal will then face Denmark on October 1 before hosting Norway in Porto on October 4 as they begin their title defence.
