Embolo Out of Swiss Squad Over Fake Covid Documents

The Swiss Football Association dropped striker Breel Embolo from the national squad for upcoming Nations League fixtures following revelations that authorities fined him for using forged Covid-19 test certificates during the pandemic.

The decision comes just days after team captain Granit Xhaka admitted to using a fake certificate to bypass mandatory vaccination requirements.

While the Swiss FA announced Embolo’s exclusion without giving an explicit reason, Swiss media reports linked the decision directly to a fine imposed on the Atlanta United forward in November 2025.

Embolo publicly acknowledged his error, telling the St. Galler Tagblatt daily that he understood his actions were wrong and fully accepted responsibility.

The disciplinary actions leave Switzerland without two key veterans as they launch their Nations League campaign against North Macedonia on Saturday before travelling to face Scotland on September 29.

The football association plans to formally review Xhaka’s status following the international window, while Switzerland prepare for home fixtures against Slovenia and North Macedonia in Lucerne next month.
