African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore is scheduled to return to Nigeria from the United States, according to a statement his campaign issued on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
The campaign said Sowore’s visit to the United States included time with his family after what it described as more than 20 months of separation linked to arrests, detentions, travel restrictions and the seizure of his international passport by Nigerian security agencies.
During his stay, Sowore also held meetings with Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders, where he discussed issues surrounding Nigeria’s political direction and the agenda of his 2027 presidential campaign.
The statement said Sowore participated in a solidarity march for Palestine in New York and continued his advocacy for voting rights for Nigerians living abroad. It quoted him as supporting the introduction of diaspora voting, saying it would allow Nigerians outside the country to take part in the electoral process.
Sowore is expected to arrive at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos before travelling to Abuja, where he will continue to attend proceedings in a cybercrime case the State Security Service (SSS) filed against him in 2025.
His campaign said the return marks the beginning of another phase of his nationwide mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
According to the statement, Sowore plans to engage with different groups across Nigeria, including workers, students, young people, women, farmers, traders, professionals and communities, as the AAC presents its political agenda to voters.
The campaign said its 2027 platform is focused on political, social and economic reforms, describing the election as an opportunity for Nigerians to consider changes to the country’s current political system.
