Kyiv University Moves to Remote Learning Amid Attacks

Ukraine’s top university has switched to remote classes after a surge in Russian daytime drone attacks on Kyiv. Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv announced the move on Tuesday.

The university said remote learning would continue until at least October 16. It cited the “deteriorating security situation in Kyiv” as the reason for the decision.

The university also said it would “switch to a remote format of work” during the period, and its main campus is close to Ukraine’s Academy of Sciences, which was hit by a drone strike on Monday, in which one person was killed.

The strike was the latest in a growing wave of Russian drone and missile attacks on central Kyiv. The area was previously considered one of the most protected parts of the Ukrainian capital, and for weeks, repeated drone and missile attacks have triggered long air raid alerts across the city.

The alerts have disrupted daily life for Kyiv’s estimated three million residents.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has urged Western allies to provide more air defence systems, and Kyiv says it needs them to protect the city from the ongoing attacks.

Russia has also deployed faster jet-powered drones in recent weeks, which the new drones are harder for Ukrainian forces to intercept than earlier models.
