Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said Nigeria’s 2027 general election will provide a test of the country’s democratic maturity, urging citizens to prioritise peace, unity and justice.

Jonathan made the call in his Independence Day message to Nigerians on Thursday, as the country marked its 66th anniversary of independence.

The former President urged Nigerians to remain patriotic and committed to national unity as preparations for the next electoral cycle gather momentum.

“In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice,” he said.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since independence, Jonathan said the country had experienced numerous challenges but had continued to overcome them through the resilience of its people.

He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and united while working towards a better future, noting that the country had taken control of its destiny when it gained independence 66 years ago.

“Today, our nation marks another significant milestone in its journey of nationhood. Sixty-six years ago, we secured our independence and took our destiny into our own hands.

“Through the years, Nigeria has faced numerous challenges, but through our collective resilience, we have always emerged triumphant.

“As we reflect on this journey, let us remain steadfast in faith and hope, and continue to work in unity,” he said.

Jonathan said Nigeria had significant opportunities ahead if its diversity and abundant human and natural resources were effectively harnessed to support sustainable development.

He particularly urged young Nigerians to remain hopeful and courageous, saying collective efforts were necessary to build a country capable of providing a prosperous future for future generations.

The former President, however, said achieving that future would require greater responsibility from leaders at all levels.

He called on political and public leaders to demonstrate stronger patriotism and address Nigeria’s social and economic challenges through personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability and adherence to the rule of law.

“Yet, for this future to be realised, leadership must rise to the occasion. To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism.

“We must confront our pressing social and economic challenges by prioritising personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law,” Jonathan said.

Jonathan also urged Nigerians to remain committed to national service and contribute to building a peaceful, secure and equitable country for present and future generations.

“Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead,” he added.
