The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans for a real-time tracker to monitor election preparations nationwide.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, disclosed this on Monday in Lagos while opening a two-day Strategic Operational Workshop for Administrative Secretaries.
Amupitan said the innovation would allow the Commission to monitor preparations across all 36 states and Abuja instantly.
He said it would replace “reactive panic with proactive management” before the 2027 General Election.
The workshop is expected to produce a standardised, Excel-based Administrative Secretary Master Operational Tracker Template.
The template will be linked to INEC’s Election Monitoring and Support Centre (EMSC) dashboard and Election Project Plan (EPP).
Amupitan said INEC had historically lacked a uniform system for tracking the operational duties of Administrative Secretaries.
He described the new tracker as a solution to the institutional gap.
According to him, the system will give Resident Electoral Commissioners, Supervising National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission and Headquarters instant updates on election readiness.
This will include material distribution, ad hoc staff training, and preparations across the states.
Amupitan said the tracker would also serve beyond the 2027 election as a permanent onboarding tool for future Administrative Secretaries.
He linked the initiative to INEC’s efforts to maintain a clean voter register and make Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) collection easier.
He said voter enrolment was approaching 100 million, with Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) listed among five key operational areas under review.
The other areas are logistics and material management, electoral technology, ad-hoc staff optimisation and financial compliance.
Amupitan said the initiative drew on lessons from recent off-cycle elections, including the Osun State governorship election.
He said disciplined logistics and effective technology contributed to a transparent outcome in Osun.
The INEC chairman said the Commission now wants to replicate that standard nationwide within the six-month window before the 2027 General Election.
In his remarks, Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Professor Ayobami Salami, described the workshop as timely.
Salami also commended the European Union for supporting the exercise through the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN).
