The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has recorded more than 4,000 deaths from its worst-ever Ebola outbreak.

Reuters reported that government data released on Friday showed that the death toll has reached 4,018. The country has also recorded 8,300 confirmed cases across seven provinces, and the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus is causing the outbreak. It has now become the largest and deadliest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s history.

The outbreak has surpassed the country’s 2018–2020 Ebola epidemic. It is now second only to the 2014–2016 West African Ebola outbreak. That epidemic infected more than 28,600 people and killed over 11,000 across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Meanwhile, more than 2,000 people have recovered from the disease in Congo, and health authorities have reported some signs of slowing transmission in parts of Ituri province.

However, the virus continues to spread rapidly in eastern Congo, including North Kivu. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed that the outbreak now affects seven provinces.

South Ubangi became the seventh affected province last month. The outbreak reached the province after a man who had travelled from eastern Congo died from the virus. Authorities are continuing efforts to contain the spread across affected communities.

However, conflict, insecurity, displacement and limited access to healthcare are complicating the response.
