China’s commerce ministry launched an anti-dumping investigation into European Union (EU) imports of p-nitrotoluene on Saturday, signalling escalated economic friction days before scheduled high-level talks.

Responding to formal complaints from domestic producers, Beijing is investigating whether low-priced EU shipments of the industrial chemical—a key compound used in dyes, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides—are damaging local manufacturing.

The move directly precedes a crucial Thursday meeting in Beijing between EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič and Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao.

The investigation underscores mounting trade friction between Brussels and Beijing, following an EU probe into Chinese polyvinyl chloride imports initiated in September.

While European officials accuse China of flooding global markets with heavily subsidised exports, Beijing rejects the claim and insists on dialogue to resolve disputes.

The Chinese commerce ministry stated that its anti-dumping inquiry will last 12 months, with an option to extend proceedings for an additional six months.
