Nigerian Relationship coach Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo has linked women’s money requests to a loss of power in relationships.

Okonkwo said this on NewsCentral TV’s Take 3 programme on Tuesday, during a discussion about money and relationships. He said men should support their partners because they genuinely want to, not because women depend on them financially.

“I would rather a guy should take care of you because he wants to, not because he needs to,” he said.

He said regularly asking a partner for money could affect a woman’s position in the relationship. He argued that financial dependence may also limit how freely she can raise concerns or complain about issues.

“The moment you start asking for money, you know, you’ve already lost power in that relationship. You know, you’ve already lost power,” he added.

The author said many women may not realise how financial dependence can affect their ability to speak up in a relationship.

“There’s a limit to what you can complain about. That’s what most ladies don’t realize,” he said.
