Families of two Tanzanian miners killed in 2019 are suing the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) in a landmark civil trial opening Wednesday at London’s High Court.
The plaintiffs contend that the LBMA acted negligently by certifying gold from the North Mara mine as responsibly sourced despite widespread evidence of systemic human rights abuses.
According to law firm Leigh Day, Tanzanian police officers fatally shot both 23-year-old miners in separate 2019 incidents while dispersing artisanal workers.

The lawsuit alleges that the LBMA failed to uphold its standards when it renewed accreditation for the refinery processing the mine’s gold, while the LBMA maintains it launched an internal review that yielded operational improvements after learning of the connection.
