The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has criticised Peter Obi, for insisting that he won the last presidential election despite acknowledging that he had no evidence to support the claim.

The council described Obi’s remarks as a troubling disregard for facts, accusing the former Anambra State governor of contradicting official election records.

In a statement issued on Friday, the council’s spokesperson, Dele Alake, reacted to comments Obi made during a recent interview with the BBC, in which he maintained that he won the 2023 presidential election.

Obi, who has been linked to the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 presidential election, reportedly said: “I don’t like going back to the past; I won the last election. There’s no evidence, but I won the election, as everything is not based on evidence.”

Reacting to the comments, the APC campaign council argued that Obi’s continued assertion contradicted the official results of the election.

“For a candidate who placed a distant third in the presidential poll to persistently insist he won, without evidence and contrary to all official records, reflects a deep and troubling disconnection from reality and absolute disregard for facts,” the statement read.

The council maintained that President Bola Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared him the winner.

It also noted that the outcome was subsequently upheld by both the Presidential Election Petition Court and the Supreme Court.

APC defends Tinubu’s administration

The campaign council also defended the Tinubu administration, arguing that its economic reforms had contributed to economic stability, infrastructure development, support for small businesses, improvements in healthcare and education, and job creation.

However, these assessments were presented as the council’s position on the administration’s performance.

The APC body also challenged Obi to honour his reported promise to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if official records showed that his administration had left liabilities in Anambra State.

The council claimed that the state’s financial records had already established the existence of such liabilities.

It did not provide further details of the records in the statement as presented.
