Universal and Blumhouse’s new horror film “Other Mommy,” starring Oscar winner Jessica Chastain, conquered the North American box office this weekend with a $27.5 million debut.
Chastain plays a dual role as a terrifying demon mimicking a child’s mother. Despite severe critical backlash and negative audience reviews, the sinister concept successfully drove moviegoers to theatres, securing the top spot ahead of competing releases.
Meanwhile, Aaron Sorkin’s high-profile Facebook drama sequel, “The Social Reckoning,” stumbled in fifth place with a disappointing $5.5 million opening.

The film features Mikey Madison as whistleblower Frances Haugen alongside Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg and Jeremy Allen White as a journalist.

Industry analysts attributed the weak start to shifting audience preferences, noting that corporate intrigue stories increasingly struggle to attract big-screen moviegoers away from streaming television.
In holdover news, Amazon MGM’s psychological thriller “Verity” dropped to second place with $11.5 million, while Sony’s “Resident Evil” captured third with $8.4 million, pushing its global total past $319 million.
Paramount’s wilderness survival drama “Heart of the Beast,” starring Brad Pitt, earned fourth place with $7.1 million.
