British Prime Minister Andy Burnham promised to publish all past communications and interactions with Manchester City following the club’s conviction for breaching Premier League financial rules.
Burnham, who served as Mayor of Greater Manchester from 2017 to June 2026, faced mounting political scrutiny after previously expressing concern over potential ownership changes by the Abu Dhabi United Group.
Speaking on The Rest is Politics podcast, Burnham clarified that he held only one major meeting with club officials in 2021 and insisted that political partnerships for local urban investment remain separate from football governance matters.

The transparency commitment comes as opposition leaders demand full disclosure regarding the government’s ties to the Abu Dhabi-backed club, which drove extensive redevelopment projects across Manchester.

Following Burnham’s initial comments, Downing Street backtracked to reinforce that no organisation remains above the rules.
Government spokespersons reiterated that the independent legal process surrounding Manchester City must run its course without political interference.
Manchester City continues to deny all charges after an independent panel found the club guilty of over 100 breaches, including fabricating commercial deals to disguise more than £900 million ($1.2 billion) in financial irregularities between 2009 and 2018.
As the club launches an official appeal against the ruling, potential penalties range from heavy fines and points deductions to possible expulsion from the English top flight.
