The Kogi State High Court in Okene has sentenced Abdulmutalib Abduljabar to death by hanging for the murder of his friend, Momohjimoh Abduljafar, at GKAS Hotel in Okene.

Justice A.S. Hussein delivered the judgment convicting Abduljabar of culpable homicide punishable by death under Section 221 of the Kogi State Penal Code, 2019, as amended.

The judge held that the prosecution presented overwhelming evidence proving beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant deliberately stabbed his friend to death.

According to the prosecution counsel, Esther J. John, the incident occurred on 6 June 2025 at GKAS Hotel in Okene, where Abduljabar allegedly stabbed Abduljafar with a sharp, lethal object, resulting in his death.

In his ruling, Justice Hussein dismissed the arguments presented by the defence counsel, Baba Shehu Ahmad, before sentencing Abduljabar to death by hanging.

Prosecution welcomes judgment

Reacting to the judgment, John expressed satisfaction with the outcome, saying justice had been served. She also commended the presiding judge for the ruling.

The family of the deceased equally expressed satisfaction with the judgment.

However, Ahmad said he would appeal the decision after studying the certified true copy of the judgment.

The planned appeal could provide a further legal challenge to the conviction and sentence.
