West Ham boosted their promotion campaign for an immediate return to the Premier League by securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Championship leaders Swansea on Saturday.

Divine Mukasa struck in the first half to break Swansea’s four-match winning streak and hand the hosts their first home loss since April.

The second-placed Hammers moved within one point of the Welsh side in front of a record Swansea crowd of 20,973.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg defended his decision to bench league top scorer Will Lankshear after the striker came on at half-time to inspire a 2-2 comeback draw against Cardiff.

Cardiff had stunned third-placed Boro with early goals from Jack Moylan and Ollie Tanner, but Tommy Conway reduced the deficit before Lankshear netted his 11th goal of the season to rescue a point.

In other fixtures across the division, fourth-placed Birmingham swept past QPR 3-0 courtesy of a Liam Millar brace, while West Bromwich Albion mounted a thrilling second-half fightback to edge Blackburn 3-2.

After trailing to an Andri Gudjohnsen double, West Brom responded through Barney Stewart and an Isaac Price penalty before substitute Felix Horn Myhre sealed the win in the 89th minute.

Down the table, Wrexham eased pressure on manager Phil Parkinson by routing bottom-side Preston 4-1, Watford secured a 2-0 win over Charlton to relieve manager Alessio Dionisi, and Millwall rallied from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Lincoln.
