The Onidogun of Idogun in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, Oba Moses Ekundayo Bakare, has died after reportedly collapsing on Wednesday.

The traditional ruler was rushed to a hospital, where he reportedly remained in a coma for 24 hours before dying on Thursday evening.

His death comes nearly a year after a crisis erupted in Idogun in October 2025, when some residents allegedly assaulted him in an incident captured in a viral video.

Government confirms monarch’s death

The Ondo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, confirmed the monarch’s death and expressed the state government’s condolences to his family and the Idogun community.

Ajanaku, who is also an indigene of Idogun, said the community’s chiefs had informed him of the development.

He appealed to residents to maintain peace and order and avoid violence during the mourning period.

Following the October 2025 crisis, the Ondo State Government constituted a panel of inquiry to investigate the incident and submit its findings.

However, the panel’s report has yet to be made public.

Residents reportedly block monarch’s remains

Meanwhile, reports from Idogun indicated that some residents opposed to the late monarch prevented his remains from being brought into the community on Thursday.

The residents reportedly blocked the road with logs of wood, forcing those transporting the body to return it to a mortuary in Owo.

The reported development has raised fresh concerns over tensions in the community following the crisis that led to the monarch’s departure from Idogun.

Authorities have appealed for calm as the community mourns the traditional ruler.
