The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has rejected allegations that the Nigerian government is plotting to assassinate former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, APC Presidential Campaign Council spokesperson Dele Alake described the allegation by ADC member Timi Frank as serious and called on security agencies to investigate it.
Frank had raised concerns over Atiku’s safety and called for international attention to alleged threats against the former vice president. He also questioned the status of security personnel assigned to Atiku.

Responding, the APC campaign council said neither President Bola Tinubu’s administration nor the council was involved in any plan to harm Atiku or other opposition figures.
The council also disputed claims that Atiku’s security personnel had been withdrawn, saying the former vice president remained protected by the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services.

According to the statement, President Tinubu recently directed security agencies to strengthen protection for presidential, vice-presidential, governorship, and deputy governorship candidates as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections. The council said Atiku benefits from security arrangements attached to his status as a former vice president and presidential candidate.
Alake called on Frank to provide security agencies with any information supporting his allegation, arguing that any credible threat to a political candidate should be investigated regardless of party affiliation.
The APC campaign council further appealed to political parties, candidates and their supporters to make responsible public statements during the election period.

It said political competition should remain peaceful, lawful and focused on issues affecting Nigerians rather than unverified allegations or personal attacks.
The dispute comes as Nigeria’s political parties ramp up campaign activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with both the APC and ADC positioning their presidential candidates for the contest.
The APC Presidential Campaign Council was inaugurated earlier in October, with Alake serving as one of its principal campaign spokespersons.
