A 65-year-old female swimmer died on Tuesday, following a severe shark attack at Orient Beach in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province.
Local municipal authorities confirmed that the victim was swimming with a group when she signalled for help after sustaining deep wounds to her thigh and upper arm.
Bystanders brought the woman back to the shore, where emergency personnel declared her dead on the beach.
Following the incident, Eastern Cape police launched an inquest into the attack, while local officials covered the victim’s body near the water as community members gathered.

The Buffalo City Municipality immediately closed both Orient Beach and adjacent Eastern Beach until further notice, warning beachgoers and swimmers to exercise extreme caution along the coast.
Authorities have not yet identified the species of shark involved in the fatal incident.
