The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill submitted the draft National Policing Bill, 2026, alongside 29 consequential amendment bills to the Ministry of Justice for legislative drafting review on Monday.
The submission advances the Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, which replaces the single Nigeria Police Force with a dual structure comprising a Federal Police Service and State Police Services.
Several state legislatures—including Ogun, Delta, Kwara, Plateau, and Adamawa—approved the constitutional provisions on Tuesday, joining earlier endorsements from Edo, Osun, Oyo, Rivers, and Zamfara.
The Justice Ministry expects to return the validated drafts by October 30, 2026, enabling the working group to submit final proposals to the President before transmission to the National Assembly.

Chief of Staff to the President and Working Group Chairman Femi Gbajabiamila stated, “The ministry’s review will ensure that the bills conform to legislative drafting standards and conventions and that they do not conflict with existing laws.”
Senate Spokesman Senator Yemi Adaramodu reassured the public regarding state-level deliberations, affirming, “All those things will be brought to us, and we will put them under consideration because we are still going to hold a conference to address it.”
