A tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile off Oman’s coast near the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, triggering a fire, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

The tanker, 11 nautical miles (around 20 kilometres) off the town of Bukha, is “now at anchor”, the UKMTO reported.

UKMTO said all crew members were safe and there had been no reported environmental damage.

“All crew are reported as safe. There is no reported environmental impact at this time,” it said.

The agency also disclosed a separate incident off Iraq’s coast on Tuesday, when a projectile struck a tanker about 30 nautical miles from the town of Al Faw.

No casualties or damage were reported in that incident.

The attacks come as tensions over the strategic waterway continue to disrupt maritime traffic.

Before the Middle East war began in late February with US-Israeli strikes on Iran, the Strait of Hormuz carried about 20 per cent of global oil and gas supplies.

Since the conflict began, Iran has tightened its grip on the shipping route and regularly targeted vessels attempting to pass without its authorisation.

The United States has maintained a blockade on Iranian ports, while negotiations between Washington and Tehran remain deadlocked.

Attacks on vessels navigating the waterway have increased in recent days as the US escorts more ships through the strait and Iran seeks to retain control over maritime passage.
