The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a health alert to American citizens in the country following Nigeria’s confirmation of a case of Bundibugyo virus disease, a type of Ebola disease.

The mission announced the advisory in a post on its official X(formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, noting that Nigerian health authorities had begun tracing people who may have come into contact with the infected person.

It added that the Nigerian government reported that the patient had travelled from Uganda to Nigeria by air.

The US Mission advised travellers and residents to consult the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website for information on Ebola and health precautions for people travelling to Nigeria.

It also urged anyone who may have been exposed to the virus to contact a healthcare provider for guidance if they developed symptoms associated with Ebola.

The mission advised potentially exposed individuals to alert their healthcare providers before seeking in-person treatment so they could receive appropriate instructions.

“If at risk for Ebola, alert your healthcare provider if you are experiencing symptoms consistent with Ebola to receive guidance prior to presenting for care,” the advisory stated.

It also reminded travellers to continue taking malaria-prevention medication as prescribed, warning that malaria symptoms can resemble those of Ebola and cause unnecessary alarm.

“Continue to take malaria prophylaxis as recommended by your doctor. Symptoms of malaria can mimic symptoms of Ebola, leading to preventable health scares,” it added.

The advisory recommended monitoring personal health for 21 days after travelling to an area experiencing an Ebola outbreak.

“Monitor your health for 21 days following travel to an area experiencing an Ebola outbreak,” the mission said.

The mission further directed travellers to the US Embassy’s Nigeria country page for general health information and its list of medical providers for assistance when needed.

It also advised Americans travelling abroad to contact their travel insurance providers to understand the medical evacuation options available if they became ill overseas.

The advisory comes as Nigerian health authorities continue contact tracing and other public health measures following the confirmed case.
