Tanzania discovered an estimated 223 billion cubic feet of natural gas in the southern Mnazi Bay region, marking the country’s first gas discovery in over a decade.
Energy Minister Juma Homera announced on Tuesday that state-owned Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) and French energy company Maurel & Prom uncovered the reserves at the Kasa-1X ST2 well.
The joint venture drilled three wells—MB-5, MS-2, and Kasa-1X ST2—to expand the nation’s domestic supply, with Maurel & Prom confirming that initial gas production could begin as early as next month.

The major find expands Tanzania’s existing reserve base of approximately 57.5 trillion standard cubic feet.
Homera stated that TPDC is already negotiating with four potential investors to develop small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects.
The discovery promises to significantly bolster the East African nation’s energy infrastructure and international investment appeal.
