Pope Leo XIV has submitted his mail-in ballot in Chicago for the upcoming United States midterm elections, marking the first known time a reigning pope has voted in a political election.

The Vatican confirmed Friday that the Chicago-born pontiff, formerly known as Robert Francis Prevost, exercised his right to vote as a U.S. citizen in line with his lifelong practice of civic participation.

Church officials emphasised that the head of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics firmly supports the fundamental right and duty of citizens to engage in democratic processes.

The vote follows a high-profile rift between the American-born pontiff and U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

The two leaders have clashed openly over immigration enforcement policies and foreign interventions, with Trump criticising the pope as weak and the pontiff maintaining he remains unfazed by political attacks.

Vatican sources noted that Pope Leo XIV, who holds dual citizenship, also regularly cast ballots during his decades living and serving as a bishop in Peru.
