The African Action Congress (AAC) has called on security agencies to investigate an alleged attack on its 2027 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, and members of his campaign team in Ekiti State.

The party said Sowore’s whereabouts were unknown after the reported incident, which occurred at about 1 pm on Friday, according to Punch.

In a statement issued by Abdulkareem Musa, spokesperson for the Sowore/Magashi Presidential Election Campaign, the campaign described the development as a major security concern and urged authorities to establish what happened.

It called on the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant agencies to investigate the incident and take steps to protect the candidate.

The campaign also demanded an immediate security review, protective measures and a thorough investigation, warning that authorities should act before the situation escalated into a tragedy.

It condemned violence and intimidation in the political process, insisting that disagreements between political parties should not result in attacks on people exercising their democratic rights.

“We demand an immediate security assessment, appropriate protective measures and a thorough investigation into the incident. The authorities must not wait for a tragedy before taking preventive action,” the statement read.

It added, “Politics and elections are not warfare. No political actor or party has the right to engage violence, intimidation or attacks on citizens exercising their democratic rights.”

The campaign further warned that any harm to Sowore or his team would be unacceptable and called for those responsible to be held accountable.

In a separate post on Sowore’s official X account, the campaign alleged that armed thugs had kidnapped the AAC candidate and that his location was unknown.

Sowore, who is seeking the presidency in 2027 on the AAC platform, was in Ekiti State for campaign activities on Thursday.

His lawyer had attributed his absence from proceedings at the High Court in Abuja on Thursday to his campaign engagements in the state. The court subsequently adjourned his cyberbullying trial until November.
