Senegal makes Olympic history on Saturday as the 2026 Youth Olympic Games open in Dakar, marking the first time any Olympic event takes place on African soil.
The historic tournament gathers 2,665 athletes aged 14 to 17 across 25 sports and 153 medal events.
Competition will span eight venues located in Dakar, Diamniadio, and the coastal town of Saly.

International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry highlighted the event as a landmark milestone to showcase African sports culture and administrative capacity on a global stage.
The Games also mark the return of 13 Russian athletes competing under their national flag after the Russian Olympic Committee’s suspension was lifted, alongside a dedicated refugee Olympic team.

Despite low initial domestic enthusiasm driven by local economic challenges and living costs, Senegalese officials expect the opening ceremony in Diamniadio to ignite widespread celebration.
Deploying 6,000 volunteers and 136 national competitors, Senegal aims to set a precedent for future mega-events across the continent, including South Africa’s active bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics.
