Former conservative presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro confirmed Friday that he fled Brazil for the United States, citing political persecution after he lost to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Sunday’s runoff election.
Speaking on an Instagram livestream from Florida, the senator revealed that he and his wife secretly departed Brazil on Tuesday after police revoked his passports as part of an ongoing money laundering investigation.
He travelled aboard a private jet through Argentina and Ecuador before arriving in the U.S. on Wednesday.

During the broadcast, Bolsonaro accused Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes of levying false accusations against him and alleged unspecified election irregularities.

The flight has sparked international controversy, placing U.S. President Donald Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei under pressure to address their nations’ potential roles in facilitating the escape.
Despite his exile, Bolsonaro predicted an economic collapse under President Lula and signalled plans to challenge the presidency again before 2030.
