United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned escalating drone attacks in Sudan after a strike on a market in Darfur killed at least 102 people.
Guterres said he was “appalled” by the impact of the attacks on civilians, his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said on Saturday.
“The secretary-general strongly condemns the escalating drone attacks in Sudan by the parties to the conflict and the catastrophic toll these attacks are inflicting on civilians,” Dujarric said.

He added that drone strikes have killed hundreds of people across the country and violated international humanitarian law.
“The secretary-general calls on the parties to spare the civilian population and critical infrastructure and agree without delay to a cessation of hostilities as a first step towards ending this devastating conflict,” Dujarric said.

The latest attack occurred on Monday when a drone strike by the Sudanese army hit Tanqonj Market in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur. Nyala is a stronghold of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been fighting the Sudanese army since April 2023.
The city also serves as the political and military centre of RSF-controlled territory in Darfur. The group has established a rival administration there, challenging the army-backed, internationally recognised government in Khartoum.
Sudan’s conflict is now in its fourth year. It has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions. The fighting has also triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, according to the United Nations.
