A Hong Kong court will sentence pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong on Thursday in a national security case that could result in a life prison term, according to the judiciary’s website.

Wong, 30, pleaded guilty in September to charges of colluding with foreign forces.

He is already serving a prison sentence of nearly five years for subversion and had been due for release in early 2027.

The former student leader is among the most prominent figures of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement, which has since been suppressed.

He was charged last year under a national security law introduced by Beijing in Hong Kong, a move that drew condemnation from human rights organisations.

The judiciary’s website showed on Tuesday that Wong’s sentencing hearing had been scheduled for November 5.

Wong first gained prominence during widespread protests more than a decade ago, and was later involved in the huge pro-democracy rallies in 2019 that triggered the imposition of the national security law.

Prosecutors accused Wong, self-exiled activist Nathan Law and others of seeking help from foreign entities to seriously disrupt the creation and implementation of laws or policies in Hong Kong and mainland China.

Friends of Wong told AFP earlier this year that he remained active in detention, exercising, playing the guitar and taking university courses.

The offence of colluding with foreign forces carries a possible life sentence if the conduct is considered to be of a serious nature.

However, Wong’s lawyer has asked the court to impose a sentence of between three and 10 years, arguing that the activist has already spent about six years in prison for various offences.
