The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has rescued seven officers and recovered the bodies of five others killed in an ambush by armed bandits in Zamfara State on Sunday.
The officers were travelling to the state for duty during the All Progressives Congress (APC) rerun primary elections when the attackers struck.
Following the ambush, tactical teams from the Command Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and Anti-Kidnapping Unit launched a search-and-rescue operation.

The operation rescued seven officers who were found alive and unhurt. Meanwhile, two others who sustained gunshot wounds were taken to hospital for treatment.
However, the attackers escaped with five service AK-47 rifles. The police said joint security teams had begun operations to recover the stolen weapons and arrest the fleeing suspects.
The Zamfara attack was among the major operations recorded by the NPF across 10 states in the last 48 hours.
Other operations included the arrest of suspected criminals, recovery of firearms, rescue of abducted victims and investigations into fatal incidents.
