The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has congratulated President Bola Tinubu on spending a night in a state outside Lagos and Abuja, while taking a swipe at his foreign travels.

In an open letter on Saturday following Tinubu’s visit to Akwa Ibom State, Obi said he hoped the president enjoyed the state’s warmth, hospitality and cuisine, which he suggested compared favourably with destinations Tinubu had visited abroad.

“I congratulate you on spending a night in one of Nigeria’s states outside Lagos and Abuja. I hope you enjoyed the warmth, hospitality, and delicious cuisine of Akwa Ibom, which I am sure is even better than those of the destinations where you have spent over 260 days outside Nigeria since coming into office,” Obi wrote.

Obi urged Tinubu to visit the remaining 33 states and asked how his administration had used ₦15.8 trillion in fuel subsidy savings, more than $100 billion in loans and increased tax revenues.

He demanded figures showing the government’s progress in reducing poverty, returning out-of-school children to classrooms, improving primary healthcare, increasing electricity supply and strengthening security.

Obi said Nigerians deserved answers on how public resources had been spent and called for measurable improvements in citizens’ lives.
