Butembo Ebola treatment centre reopened in DR Congo

According to the health ministry, the centre, located in Butembo, was reopened on Saturday.

An Ebola treatment centre in eastern DR Congo has reopened after an attack by gunmen forced its closure. According to the health ministry, the centre, located in Butembo, was reopened on Saturday.

Repairs were also set to begin on another treatment centre, in Katwa, that was set ablaze on the night of February 24.

Doctors Without Borders had been responsible for running both centres. The aid agency suspended its activities in both facilities after the attacks.The Butembo centre is now run by the health ministry in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.

The deadly viral disease broke out in North Kivu last August and spread to neighbouring Ituri province.

The risk of attack by active militia groups has hampered efforts to contain the epidemic.
