Ruben Amorim has been appointed coach of AC Milan, the seven-time European champions said on Monday, tasking the Portuguese with leading the club back to the Champions League.
Amorim will be paid a net annual salary of 3.5 million euros ($4.06 million) over his two-year deal, Italian media reported.
“There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and coaching AC Milan has always been one of mine,” Amorim said in a statement.
“I know exactly what this club means: history, prestige and an extraordinary fanbase around the world.”
The 41-year-old returns to coaching six months after being sacked by Manchester United with a year-and-a-half left on his contract. His departure cost the Premier League club £16.7 million ($22.4 million).
Amorim had attracted attention as a coach at Sporting Lisbon but did not make an impact at Old Trafford. His replacement, Michael Carrick, led United into next season’s Champions League.

Amorim will be tasked with securing a top-four finish in Serie A next season after Milan missed out on Europe’s top club competition on the final day of the past campaign.
Milan suffered a 2-1 home defeat to lowly Cagliari and finished fifth, behind Roma and Como, who took the final two Champions League spots.
The result, which was preceded and followed by protests by supporters against the American owners, RedBird, led to the sacking of coach Massimiliano Allegri, CEO Giorgio Furlani, and sporting directors Igli Tare and Geoffrey Moncada.
According to numerous reports, Allegri will take over at Napoli after Antonio Conte leaves.
