The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed optimism ahead of a Supreme Court ruling due today, Thursday, April 30, 2026.

The Nigerian apex court sat on April 22, 2026, to hear the ADC’s case on its internal leadership crisis. After the hearing, the court reserved judgment. The Supreme Court later set a judgment date for today.

The ADC, in a post shared on X on Thursday, described itself as the voice and hope of Nigerians.

“Today is about democracy. Today is about Nigeria. Hope is on trial — but hope will not fail. As the Supreme Court delivers judgment today, we are reminded that Nigeria must remain a democracy of choices, not control,” the party wrote.

“The African Democratic Congress (ADC) stands as the voice of the people and the hope of the common man. No to a one-party system. Yes to democracy. Yes to Nigeria.”

Former Senate President David Mark, who leads a faction of the ADC, is asking the apex court to overturn earlier rulings that allowed a suit challenging the party’s leadership to proceed.

Mark’s legal counsel, Jibrin Okutepa (SAN), argued that the courts lack jurisdiction over internal party matters, citing a March 21, 2025, Supreme Court decision which held that such disputes fall outside judicial authority.

Okutepa urged the court to uphold that precedent and nullify proceedings at the Federal High Court. The Court of Appeal had earlier ruled against Mark. The Appellate court ordered the case returned to trial and directed the parties to maintain the status quo ante bellum.

Nigeria’s electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), withdrew recognition of the Mark-led leadership of the ADC pending judicial resolution of the party’s authentic leadership following the appeal court’s ruling. Mark thereafter escalated the matter to the Supreme Court.
