AFCON Final: Morocco to Take Legal Action

The Moroccan Football Federation said it will pursue legal procedures with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA following incidents during the Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal.

The report concerns protests by Senegal players and some supporters after a penalty was awarded to Morocco in added time during Sunday’s final in Rabat. Following the penalty decision, Senegal players walked off the pitch in protest, leading to a stoppage of around 20 minutes.

During the interruption, some Senegalese supporters threw chairs and other objects from the stands and attempted to enter the field of play, according to the Moroccan federation.

The Moroccan federation, in its statement on Monday, said the incidents had “significantly affected the normal course of the match and the players’ performance”, and that Morocco then missed the penalty that could have given them their first African title in 50 years.

The Moroccan federation said it will “resort to legal procedures” with the CAF and FIFA to address the Senegalese national team’s withdrawal from the final match against the Moroccan national team and the events that followed after the referee awarded a penalty kick.

The match resumed after Senegal forward Sadio Mane appealed to his teammates to return to the field. Senegal later scored the only goal of the match early in extra time to win the final.
