Nigerian educationist Amos Dangut has assumed office as the 14th Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), beginning a five-year tenure that will run until September 2031.
Dangut took over the position on October 1, 2026, succeeding Pateh Bah of The Gambia, according to a statement by Demianus Ojijeogu, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC’s headquarters in Accra, Ghana.
The Council’s International Governing Board ratified his appointment at its 74th Annual Meeting in Accra in March 2026.

Before his appointment, Dangut served as Head of WAEC’s National Office in Nigeria, a role he assumed on October 2, 2023, and held until his elevation to Registrar.
Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, obtained in 1991; a Master of Science in Animal Science, earned in 1994; a PhD in Animal Science, completed in 2017; and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning, obtained in 2020.
His career in education began in 1994 at St Louis College, Jos, where he served as a WAEC examiner. He joined the Council in 1998 and has since held several positions across its test development, examination security, branch administration and zonal coordination departments.
His previous roles include Assistant Registrar and Subject Officer in the Test Development Division in Lagos; Head of Examinations Security and deputy to branch controllers in Uyo and Bauchi; Branch Controller in Yola; Controller of the Post Examinations Department; and Zonal Coordinator at the Ikeja Zonal Office.
WAEC described Dangut as experienced in test development, test administration and the management of branch and zonal offices. The Council said he has used information and communications technology for more than two decades to improve examination development, post-examination activities, and administration.
“He is well-skilled and versatile in Test Development, Test Administration, and Branch and Zonal Office Management. For more than two decades, he has leveraged Information and Communications Technology to innovatively improve processes in Test Development, Post-Test Activities, and test administration,” the statement read in part.

It also cited commendations for his handling of examination matters between 2000 and 2006, as well as an award for meritorious service from the Ondo State Government and Akoko South Local Government during his National Youth Service Corps programme.
During his time as Head of the National Office, Dangut served on the governing boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and the Grange Educational Foundation.

He also represented WAEC at education policy forums, including the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.
The Council said Dangut led initiatives to improve examination delivery, security, integrity and efficiency while heading its Nigerian office. These included introducing computer-based WASSCE, serialising question papers, and implementing a Digital Electronic Marking System.
Other initiatives implemented under his leadership included the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive and digital systems for examination logistics, timetable management and monitoring examiners’ attendance.
