Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has raised concerns over a suspicious payment made into one of his private bank accounts, alleging that his confidential banking details may have been compromised.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the funds were transferred by an individual unknown to him, with the transaction description stating “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”
According to the statement, neither Atiku nor his campaign team authorised, requested, or had prior knowledge of the payment or the person behind it.
The former vice president said the development was troubling because the account involved is private and its details are not publicly available.
“This raises a fundamental question: How did unknown persons obtain the confidential banking details of a private citizen?” the statement asked.
Atiku’s team argued that the alleged exposure of a former vice president’s financial information raises broader concerns about the security of Nigerians’ personal banking data.
“If the private banking information of a former Vice President and a leading presidential candidate can be accessed and deployed for reasons yet unknown, then no Nigerian’s financial privacy is safe,” the statement said.
The statement further claimed that the possibility of confidential banking information being obtained through individuals with privileged access would represent a serious breach of trust and could expose account holders to risks from criminal actors.
Atiku’s team said security agencies and the public have been informed about the incident, describing it as part of what it called “a litany of suspicious activities” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The ADC presidential candidate also urged Nigerians not to be distracted by what his team described as attempts at character attacks, saying he remains focused on providing leadership solutions to the country’s challenges.
