Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned that the integrity of the 2027 election is in jeopardy.
Atiku made the statement in a post on X following former Senate President David Mark’s letter to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, demanding a swift ruling on the leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), on Tuesday.
He added that Nigeria’s democracy is facing a threat and expressed hope that the Supreme Court will rule in favour of the ADC.

“It is increasingly evident that Nigeria’s democracy, and indeed the integrity of the 2027 general elections is in serious jeopardy. Democracy itself is now facing an existential threat,” said Atiku.
“However, I do not want to believe that the judiciary, long regarded as the last hope of the common man, would align with the ruling APC in any effort that could undermine or destroy our democratic foundations.”
The ADC, which vows to unseat Nigerian President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election, is grappling with an internal crisis. Nigeria’s electoral umpire halted recognition of the Mark-led faction of the ADC and removed the names of its National Working Committee members from its portal on April 1, 2026, following the Court of Appeal’s verdict ordering the maintenance of the status quo ante bellum in a suit filed by aggrieved party members led by Nafiu-Bala Gombe.
The Supreme Court sat on April 22, 2026, to hear the ADC suit and, after listening to all parties, reserved judgment. According to Mark, the party risks exclusion from the 2027 elections if the apex court fails to swiftly deliver a verdict on the leadership dispute.
