The Bauchi State Police Command says it has commenced enforcement of a ban on the night movement of motorcycles and tricycles within the state capital, as part of measures to tackle rising insecurity.

Police spokesperson, Nafiu Habib, said in a statement that the enforcement follows an executive directive from the state government.

He said the restriction was introduced in response to an increase in criminal activity reportedly carried out at night.

“The measure is expedient to ensure suppression of rising criminal activities under the cover of night, as security concerns continue to spill over in some parts of the state. The restriction on motorcycles commences at 8:00 p.m., while that on tricycles commences at 10:00 p.m.”

He also dismissed a viral video alleging police brutality against a Nigerian, Ishak Abubakar, popularly called “Major,” describing the claims as false and misleading.

According to him, the allegation was “malicious, baseless and intended to mislead the public while undermining ongoing enforcement operations.”

Habib said the incident stemmed from an April 18, 2026 enforcement exercise by the Bauchi State Road Traffic Agency at Wunti under-bridge, where several violators of the executive order were arrested.

He explained that Abubakar allegedly arrived at the scene after being contacted by some of those arrested and was said to have disrupted the operation.

Habib said the suspect was accused of obstructing lawful duty, disturbing public peace, attempting to incite motorcyclists and tricyclists, and interfering with enforcement activities.

He added that police reinforcements later arrested him for investigation and that while in custody, he allegedly acted violently by hitting his body against the cell walls and bars, a claim he said was documented.

The police said Abubakar was arraigned on April 20, 2026, before a magistrate’s court on charges including obstruction, assault and insulting public officers.

The command also announced the setting up of a special investigative panel to review the incident and establish the facts.

Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu warned that the command would not tolerate attacks on officers or violations of government directives, urging residents to comply with security measures and verify information through official channels.
